Distributed Galvanic Protection

Ribbon Anodes for Pipeline & Tank Cathodic Protection

Magnesium and zinc ribbon anodes supplied in defined cross-sections, coil lengths and connection configurations for buried pipelines, tank bottoms and distributed soil cathodic protection.

Note: For a galvanic CP design, specify magnesium or zinc sacrificial ribbon. An MMO ribbon anode belongs to a powered ICCP system and requires a different specification.

Product Definition

Distributed Sacrificial Current Along the Protected Asset

Ribbon anodes provide a continuous or distributed galvanic-anode geometry where installation space, current distribution or proximity to the protected asset makes discrete anodes less suitable.

Material, cross-section, unit weight, core, potential, capacity, coil length, connection spacing, soil resistivity and installation depth must be coordinated with the approved design.

Engineering Review Starts With Inputs

  • Protected asset & environment
  • Coating condition & exposed area
  • Current demand & design life
  • Alloy & electrochemical criteria
  • Geometry & mounting interface
  • Drawings, ITP & documentation

Project review

Confirm the Supply Basis Before Quotation

Specify sacrificial magnesium or zinc ribbon when the approved design calls for a galvanic anode. Powered MMO titanium ribbon is a different ICCP product and cannot be substituted directly.

01

Correct product family

Confirm the project specifies galvanic magnesium or zinc ribbon, not powered MMO ribbon.

02

Unit-weight basis

Record alloy, width, thickness, profile, net mass per unit length and total installed length.

03

Core and joints

Define the continuous core, electrical continuity, lead connections, splice treatment and coil length.

04

Installation path

Show placement depth, spacing, bending limits, backfill and access constraints on the issued drawing.

Technical Specification

Parameters to Confirm Before Purchase

Use project-specific values. A generic catalogue value is not a substitute for the approved cathodic-protection calculation or purchase specification.

Material Specified magnesium or zinc sacrificial alloy; do not mix with MMO ribbon terminology.
Cross-section Ribbon width, thickness, profile and dimensional tolerance.
Unit weight Mass per unit length, total required length and coil weight.
Core Continuous steel or other specified core and continuity requirements.
Electrical performance Potential and capacity tied to the relevant test conditions and alloy standard.
Installation Coil length, bending limits, joint and cable details, spacing, depth, soil resistivity and backfill.

Manufacturing and QA

Control the Drawing, Alloy, Mass and Interface

Manufacturing review should confirm alloy charge control, mould and core arrangement, insert preparation, casting condition, dimensions, net mass, electrical continuity, marking and packing.

Inspection and document scope must be agreed in the purchase order. Any potential, capacity, efficiency or service-life statement should identify the governing test or calculation conditions.

Available Documentation by Order Scope

Approved production drawing
Alloy or chemistry record
Net-weight inspection
Dimensional inspection
Insert or cable continuity
Marking and packing record
ITP and witness records
Project-specific certificates

Inside HELE

Inside Our Manufacturing & Quality System

Sacrificial ribbon supply should follow an approved alloy and cross-section, with mass per length, core continuity, coil identification and connection details verified against the order. HELE can align the agreed inspection and packing records with the installation schedule.

Alloy and casting

Confirm the approved alloy, core or insert, geometry and net sacrificial-alloy mass.

Electrical interface

Check continuity and the specified cable, weld or bolt attachment where the order requires it.

Inspection basis

Use the agreed methods and acceptance limits for chemistry, dimensions, weight and electrochemical evidence.

Order identification

Match markings, packing and release documents to the approved model and project schedule.

Final cathodic-protection design, installation and commissioning remain with the responsible project team unless expressly included in the contract.

FAQ

Technical and Procurement Questions

How is the correct anode type selected?
Selection must start from the protected asset, electrolyte or soil, resistivity, temperature, coating condition, approved current demand, target life, governing specification and installation constraints.
Can HELE manufacture to a customer drawing?
Yes. Manufacturability can be reviewed against the approved alloy, net mass, dimensions, insert or core, cable, mounting, tolerances, marking and inspection scope.
What performance values should be specified?
State the required potential, capacity or efficiency together with the alloy standard, test method, electrolyte, temperature, duration and reference-electrode scale. Unqualified values are not directly comparable.
What determines service life?
Service life depends on actual current demand, coating condition, environment, alloy capacity, utilization factor, net anode mass, anode resistance, placement and electrical continuity.
What quality documents are available?
Depending on the purchase order, the document package can include approved drawings, alloy or chemistry records, weight and dimensional inspection, continuity checks, marking, packing and agreed ITP records.
