What is the difference between woven and expanded titanium mesh?
Woven titanium mesh is produced from titanium wire and is specified by wire diameter, aperture, mesh count, weave and open area. Expanded titanium mesh is produced from titanium sheet or strip and is specified by sheet thickness, SWD, LWD, strand width, overall thickness and raised or flattened condition.
Does mesh count directly determine the aperture or micron size?
No. Mesh count alone does not uniquely determine aperture. The actual opening depends on both the number of openings and the wire diameter, so woven mesh should be specified using mesh count together with wire diameter and aperture.
What do SWD and LWD mean for expanded titanium mesh?
SWD and LWD describe the short-way and long-way dimensions of the expanded-mesh diamond pattern. A complete expanded-mesh specification should also include the original sheet thickness, strand width, overall thickness and whether the mesh is supplied raised or flattened.
Which material standards apply to titanium mesh?
The applicable raw-material specification depends on the mesh construction. ASTM B863 may apply to titanium wire used for woven or welded mesh, while ASTM B265 may apply to titanium sheet or strip used for expanded or perforated mesh. These specifications define the feedstock material and do not by themselves define the finished mesh geometry or dimensional tolerances.
